Nottingham Forest decision on showing Championship play-off final at City Ground

Nottingham Forest has said whether or not The City Ground will screen the Championship play-off final against Huddersfield Town at Wembley. The Reds travel to the capital on Sunday (May 29, kick-off 4.30pm), where the winners of the clash will be promoted to the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest confirmed it investigated the feasibility of showing the match on a big screen at The City Ground, but this has not been possible due to logistical issues outside of the club's control. Nottingham City Council also confirmed the game will not be shown on a big screen in Old Market Square either, encouraging punters to watch the game in a pub or a bar if they cannot get a ticket.

And there are a number of pubs and bars across Nottinghamshire showing the game, which will be broadcast live on Sky TV. One of those is The Boot Room, which is right next to The City Ground in Pavilion Road.

Owner Mark James said: "There's standing room only now, all the tables have been booked and we'll be expecting to be busy from 2pmish ahead of a 4.30pm kick-off. There's been a real buzz for the past four or five days, the queues outside the ticket office opposite us have snaked all the way around the car park inside the ground.

"I've seen lots of happy people holding tickets. We had a group of guys in the bar recently who stayed local to queue at 4.30am in the morning for tickets. Here, we'll be welcoming everyone."

The Trent Navigation Inn, on Meadow Lane, is another local pub that's experienced a high level of demand. They have a similar situation to The Boot Room.

Manager Sam Ditchfield said: "It's difficult to say how many exactly we're going to have down here but all the tables inside are fully booked. There is plenty of space for walk-ins, though."

In a statement, Nottingham City Councillor Pavlos Kotsonis, who represents Lenton and Wollaton East for Labour, and who is also the portfolio holder for leisure, culture and planning, said: "We are in dialogue with the club and understand they are expecting in the order of 40,000 fans to travel to Wembley for the match. We fully expect that other fans will find venues around the city where they can watch the match and savour the atmosphere of this historic moment for their team.

"We therefore have no plans for screens or fanzones for the match. We wish Steve Cooper and his magnificent Forest team all the very best for their momentous Wembley match this weekend.

"They have already done themselves and Nottingham proud, with a season that has seen them rise from the bottom of the Championship eight months ago to giving themselves an historic chance for promotion to the Premier League. A win on Sunday would be an incredible sporting achievement but also a huge boost for the whole city, with an estimated 100,000 extra visitors and an associated £120m boost to the local economy.

"Being a Premier League city would raise Nottingham’s profile and could make it easier to attract new investment and developments in the city." If Forest achieve promotion, experts have said it would be worth 'more than' the £170m value of the game itself to the city.
