Nottingham Forest could turn to forgotten man to save millions amid Renan Lodi transfer dream

Nottingham Forest fans would love to see Renan Lodi at the club next season, but a tighter budget and the return of a forgotten man could cloud the situation.

The Reds secured a transfer coup last summer when they brought in Brazil left-back Lodi on loan from Atletico Madrid as part of a £160m spending spree to get the team Premier League ready in double quick time.

A slow start saw him miss out on the World Cup, but Lodi's form improved sharply to the point he became a fan favourite.

Speaking on the Garibaldi Red podcast after Lodi posted an emotional message on Instagram about his season and tears on the pitch after beating Arsenal, supporter Emily Anderson was keen for him to be retained if viable.

"It would be great if we could seal his signature. Reading between the lines on his post, it felt like he was saying this isn't his home with his new baby and everything," she said.

"I'd love to see him stay but there will be other options. The pragmatist in me would say if we can get him great, but if not I would say next man up."

BT Sport and BBC Radio Five Live broadcaster Darren Fletcher believes Forest might have to look within the squad next season to free up funds elsewhere.

Fletcher points out that Forest already have Omar Richards on the books after the 25-year-old's £10m move from Bayern Munich, although he is something of an unknown quantity after missing the whole of last season with injury.

"With Lodi being on loan, if you are going to turn that into a permanent transfer that's fine, but this won't be a summer where you see them spend another £100m," Fletcher said.

"I don't think it's feasible from an FFP perspective or an ownership perspective at this stage. If you're going to spend in excess of £20m on to get yourself a goalkeeper it limits what you can do.

"We've got Omar Richards at the club, who nobody has seen yet. If you think back, the reason Lodi came in was because Richards was injured. In an ideal world, you would think he can hold down the position but we don't know yet.

"The full-back positions are the most interesting ones for me. Aurier was a one-year contract. Is he going to stick around? You've got Richards, Toffolo and Williams, who looks happiest as a wing-back.

"There's no guarantees there apart from Neco Williams. I don't know what you do with the others. Who is to say they won't loan players again? Chelsea have got to get rid of players. Manchester United will loan players.

"Players will be available so they might use the market again. It will be a more strategic approach."
