Nottingham Forest closing on exciting double transfer as defender ready for 'next step'

Nottingham Forest have taken a step closer to securing the services of Neco Williams and Omar Richards, according to reports.

Liverpool right-back Williams has long been admired by Steve Cooper following the Reds' promotion to the Premier League. The Wales international is likely to be brought in to replace Djed Spence, who looks to be signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

On the other side of defence, Bayern Munich's Richards has been linked with a move to the East Midlands after only a year in Germany.

Exciting move

New Nottingham Forest defender Moussa Niakhate believes his move to the City Ground was the 'next step' in his career.

The centre-back put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the option of a further 12 months, after signing from Mainz.

Niakhate became the club's fourth incoming of the summer transfer window, after Taiwo Awoniyi, Giulian Biancone and Dean Henderson.

After linking up with his new team-mates in Spain for the Reds' pre-season training camp, the left-sided defender shared his first words since making the switch to the East Midlands. He said: "I'm very happy. It's a great day for me and my family.

Hopes hit?

Nottingham Forest’s hopes of signing Huddersfield Town duo Lewis O’Brien and Harry Toffolo could be impacted by goings-on at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Terriers have announced that head coach Carlos Corberan has resigned from the role following the play-off final defeat against Forest back in May. The manager has been at the club for the last two seasons, but has now left just over three weeks before their first Championship game of the season.

Huddersfield have confirmed that first team coach Danny Schofield will take charge of the team for pre-season and the first game of the campaign against Burnley, but it is not clear if the new head coach is appointed on a permanent or interim basis.

But that appointment could have an impact on Forest and their interest in both O’Brien and Toffolo. Steve Cooper is said to be interested in bringing both players to the City Ground this summer.

Johnson interest

Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson might have signed a new contract at his boyhood club, but reports claim that Premier League clubs are set to test the Reds' resolve with offers later in the season.

Johnson penned fresh terms at the City Ground last month following his outstanding 2021/22 season. His 19 goals helped the club secure a return to the Premier League and reach the quarter finals of the Emirates FA Cup.

The 21-year-old had initially been considering moving on with just a year left on his contract, according to the Independent. The report adds that three Premier League clubs are now queuing up to start a bedding war for Johnson at the end of the season.

Everton, Newcastle United and Brentford are all said to be interested in the winger, according to the Independent, who claim that Johnson's new contract won't deter potential suitors, with the trio of clubs keen to follow up their interest with bids in the coming months.
