Nottingham Forest close to huge contract boost after Evangelos Marinakis talks

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is on the verge of signing a new long-term contract with the club, ahead of the start of the new Premier League season.

The Reds' head coach has been in the hot seat at the City Ground for less than a year but has made a major impact in that time. Forest sat at the bottom of the Championship table when he was appointed back in September last year, but he turned the season around as Forest climbed the table to earn a place in the play-offs.

A penalty shootout win in the semi-final against Sheffield United set up the Wembley showpiece final against Huddersfield last month. A first half own goal from Levi Colwill saw Forest return to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years.

Cooper currently has one year left on his contract at the City Ground, but reports last week claimed that the head coach had been offered a new three-year deal with the club. The Reds boss has been in Athens for a holiday with his family, but has also used the trip to hold contract talks with owner Evangelos Marinakis.

NottinghamshireLive understands that an agreement for Cooper to extend his contract at the club is close. It’s news that will come as a huge boost to the club going into the new season.

Ahead of the start of the Premier League season, Cooper outlined his ambitions for the club. “The players deserve the opportunity to be in the Premier League and there’s no doubt we deserved to get promoted,” he said.

“I’m really proud of the football club and we’ve reminded the world how big and how special this club is. We’ve been desperate for something like this and over the past eight or nine months we’ve built a really strong connection with the supporters.”
