Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper sends clear top-six message after important win

Head coach Steve Cooper refused to get carried away as Nottingham Forest took a big step towards guaranteeing a top-six finish with victory over Peterborough United.

Sam Surridge’s first-half header proved to be enough to secure three points for the Reds at London Road. But they had to fight hard for the win as their opponents scrapped for their lives.

With four games remaining, Forest now just need one point to mathematically make sure of a play-off place, at least. But ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to Fulham, boss Cooper was keen to stress the job still isn’t done.

“There’s still work to do. I haven’t looked at it, to be honest. I don’t even know what the other results are. Maybe I should have checked,” he said.

“Until anything is absolutely guaranteed, we’ll be fighting until the last minute. You saw that today.

“We’ll just stick to our plan. We go again now.

“We go into this busy period, with four games left. We’ll just concentrate on our work, recover well and try to be in the best shape possible for going to Fulham.

“It was always going to be an unpredictable, uneasy game. We needed to be very clear about what it took to win in the circumstances around the game. In general, I thought we did that.

“Were we at our most purist? No. Was the game pure? No. But we showed enough quality to score a brilliant goal. We should have gone two up, at least. But while you don’t, you’ve got to manage the other part of the game.”
