Nottingham Forest appoint 'tremendous' new captaincy duo

Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper has named Joe Worrall club captain ahead of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

The captain's armband had been vacated when Lewis Grabban left the club on the expiry of his contract in the summer, and Worrall has now been given the role.

His fellow academy graduate Ryan Yates has been handed the role of vice-captain. The season gets under way on Saturday with a trip to Newcastle United and both players are relishing their new roles.

"First of all, I'd like to thank Steve Cooper and the coaching staff for giving me this opportunity." Worrall told the club website. To be given the chance to captain my hometown club means so much to me and it's an absolute honour, and I say that with all my heart.

"All I've ever wanted to do since I was a kid was to play for Forest, so to captain them too is a dream come true. I've been here 7-8 years and worked under some great captains, and I know what's demanded of us."

On his new role as Worrall's deputy, Yates said: "It's a huge honour and it shows the amount of trust that Steve Cooper has shown in me and I'm looking forward to having that extra responsibility."

After allocating the new leadership roles ahead of the season, Steve Cooper was full of praise for both players. "Joe is a tremendous lad and really embodies everything we're looking to create here at the club," he said.

"Since the day I walked into the building it was clear Joe has the respect of the dressing room and his performances on the pitch are full of drive, leadership and quality which is something that inspires those around him. I'm looking forward to seeing him continue to grow and flourish in his new role ahead of what will be an exciting season for the club.

"Yatesy is similar to Joe in terms of constantly looking to raise the levels of both himself and his teammates, and is a player that excelled last season. We're delighted to have both Joe and Ryan in their new roles and it'll stand us in good stead ahead of what we know will be a tough but exciting Premier League season."
