Nottingham Forest 'agree' deal for third January transfer as key clause emerges

Nottingham Forest have "agreed" a loan deal to sign Newcastle striker Chris Wood with an obligation to buy.

The Reds are looking to bring in a replacement for Taiwo Awoniyi after he was ruled out with a long-term injury earlier this month. He felt "soreness in the groin" in the 1-0 win over Southampton and is expected to be on the side lines for longer than expected.

With Wood falling down the pecking order behind Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson at St James' Park, Newcastle have allowed the 31-year-old to go out on loan for the remainder of the season. According to journalist John Percy, a deal has been agreed between the clubs, and Wood will now travel to Nottingham for a medical, later today (Thursday).

His loan will include an obligation to make the move permanent "based on certain triggers", according to Telegraph writer Percy.

Reds boss Steve Cooper had previously highlighted the importance of reinforcing his squad this month due to injuries. "It has changed a little bit because of the injuries, but also, we’ve been able to really look at what we think we’ve got already and where we think we need to improve.

"The other thing, let’s be honest, is we are playing in the Premier League and a lot of people are experiencing it for the first time. Game in, game out, you quickly realise what you need in your team to give yourselves the best chance of competing. That’s the other caveat that goes into it."
