Nottingham Forest a 'strong suitor' for in-demand Rangers ace as exit expected

Nottingham Forest are said to be chasing the signature of Rangers defender Connor Goldson - but they are not the only Championship side being linked with a move.

The 29-year-old has just a few months left to run on his deal at Ibrox, and reports suggest he is expected to move on in the summer, despite holding talks over fresh terms.

He is now free to speak to interested clubs, with the Reds and West Bromwich Albion competing to secure a pre-contract agreement, according to the Scottish Sun.

The two teams are said to “have emerged as the strongest suitors” for Goldson, although it is claimed at least one other club “is pushing hard” to snap up the centre-back.

Rangers have agreed a pre-contract with Hearts’ John Souttar - who was also linked with Forest - amid suggestions he is seen as a replacement for Goldson.

The Sun adds there are no signs the Scottish giants want “to recoup transfer cash” for the player during the January transfer window, because he is seen as a key figure in their title defence and fight for a Champions League spot.

Goldson played alongside Reds defender Joe Worrall when the Nigel Doughty Academy graduate had a loan spell north of the border in the 2018/19 campaign.

Goldson had joined Rangers in June 2018, making the move from Brighton and Hove Albion. Prior to that, he had made more than 100 league appearances for Shrewsbury Town and had a loan spell at Cheltenham Town.

Forest have signed centre-back Steve Cook this month, but Worrall is facing six weeks out of action with a rib injury.

Fellow defenders Tobias Figueiredo and Rodrigo Ely, who has yet to make his debut, will see their contracts come to an end in the summer.

The club also have Scott McKenna and Loic Mbe Soh on the books.
