Nottingham Forest 2-3 Newcastle, Liverpool 3-1 Burnley, and more: football clockwatch – as it happened

Will Unwin was at the City Ground to take in the five-goal showdown. And with that in, I’ll say goodbye. Cheers for tuning in.

Quite the winner from Bruno. He saw where that Elanga pass was going before everyone else on the pitch – but still had loads to do after.

Make sure you catch up on all the reaction from the big results in Germany and Spain. Poor Harry.

So Newcastle are up to seventh, trailing Manchester United, who have a game in hand, by two points. Plenty going on when Eddie Howe’s men play lately: this follows on their 4-4 draw with Luton, 3-1 win over Aston Villa and 3-2 defeat to Manchester City.

FULL-TIME: Nottingham Forest 2-3 Newcastle

There’s no third equaliser for Forest, with Bruno’s second goal of the match the decisive one.

Stop what you’re doing and dig out Leverkusen’s third goal against Bayern. Trust me.

And, finally, the action from the Cottage:

Ivan Toney is also back and doing his thing:

Guess who’s back?

The Late Show with Tottenham Hotspur:

The good news for Liverpool: they’re still top of the pile. The bad news: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injured his knee.

From earlier in the day, Sheffield United nabbed a rare victory, winning 3-1 at Kenilworth Road. That probably doesn’t change their season but could have a serious impact on Luton’s.

Nottingham Forest 2-3 Newcastle: Gio Reyna, the new boy, is on for Forest as they chase another equaliser.

GOAL! Nottingham Forest 2-3 Newcastle (Bruno Guimarães 66)

Beautiful from Bruno. He gets on the end of a wayward pass from Anthony Elanga on the edge of the box and curls it into the bottom right corner to give Newcastle the lead once again.

Full-time at the Stadio Olimpico, with Inter beating Roma 4-2. Alessandro Bastoni applied the cherry on top in injury time.

Nottingham Forest 2-2 Newcastle: Route-one from Forest, with Awoniyi getting on the end of a goal kick, but he can’t get proper control of the ball and eventually stumbles over in the box, under pressure from the keeper and the chasing Botman. There’s an appeal for a penalty kick. It’s a no from me and VAR.

Nottingham Forest 2-2 Newcastle: A change for Newcastle just before the hour mark – Harvey Barnes replaces Miguel Almirón.

Real Madrid are now 3-0 up against Girona, and it’s down to those two again: Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham.

A huge moment in the Bundesliga …

Nottingham Forest 2-2 Newcastle: Forest have the ball in the back of the net … but the flag goes up! It was Taiwo Awoniyi who slotted in, but he was clearly off.

Hello, folks. Loads of action across Europe and there’s a real humdinger coming to a close in Italy. Inter are beating Roma 3-2 with less than 10 minutes of normal time to go, having been 2-1 down at half-time.

Right, I’ve done my bit. It’s time to hand you over to Taha Hashim for the second half. Go easy.

Over in Germany, Bayer Leverkusen are leading Bayern Munich 1-0 in their Bundesliga title clash while, in Spain, Real Madrid are 2-0 up against Girona. We’ve got minute-by-minute coverage of both games, in case you’d like to triple tab for the rest of the evening.

An email from Chris Paraskevas has just landed. “This first-half Newcastle performance has been a perfect snapshot of our season so far: shoots of promise ultimately undone by shaky foundations.

“I’m sure there will be a Dan Burn witchhunt on social media but how can Newcastle’s entire midfield be caught upfield for that first goal? It makes you pine for the simpler times of the Claude Makélélé era of the holding mid (when the holding midfielder actually, ermmm ... held their position and did some actual defending).”

Nottingham Forest 2-2 Newcastle, half-time

Twice Newcastle have led, and twice Forest’s wide men have pegged them back, with both sides scoring excellent goals. Thoughts on that first half?

Goal! Nottingham Forest 2-2 Newcastle (Hudson-Odoi 45+6)

My goodness. Callum Hudson-Odoi races away up the left flank, plays a one-two with Nicolás Domínguez on the edge of the area then scoops a spectacular shot past Dubravka from distance. It’s turning into quite a game, this.

Goal! Nottingham Forest 1-2 Newcastle (Schär 44)

Great finish. Trippier floats in a free kick from distance, Botman heads it across the box and Fabian Schär pops up with a half volley which rockets into the bottom corner. Newcastle lead once more.

Just in case you missed our minute-by-minute, Qatar have won the Asian Cup via a hat-trick of penalties from Akram Afif. Here’s the match report, in case you’d like a read.

Goal! Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle (Elanga 26)

It’s that man Elanga again but, this time, he finds the net. The winger gets between Burn and Sven Botman then slots low beneath Dubravka’s legs. Gibbs-White provided a lovely threaded assist. Game on!

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Newcastle: Another big chance unfulfilled for Forest. Anthony Elanga gets away from Dan Burn and works an angle, but Martin Dubravka makes an excellent save.

Any National League aficionados in the house? There’s a late kick off in the fifth tier, too, with Woking hosting Hartlepool United. The latter have opened the scoring via Joe Grey. Jeff Stelling will be pleased.

Goal! Nottingham Forest 0-1 Newcastle (Guimarães 10)

And just like that, the visitors are ahead. A Newcastle corner is played short to Kieran Trippier, who smashes a cross to the far post and finds Bruno Guimarães who scores an outrageous volley with the outside of his right boot.

I’ve had a few emails on Liverpool v Burnley, so I’ll get them all in one update.

Eagle Brosi has pointed out that the Clarets’ defeat means they can no longer mathematically win the league. Tough one to take.

Joe Pearson is surprised: Watching Klopp and Kompany embrace at the end of the Liverpool v Burnley match. Kompany appears to be taller than Klopp! Who knew?

Martin Kerr asks: All four goals in Liverpool v Burnley were headers - when’s the last time that happened?

Sounds like one for the Knowledge. You can email us or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU.

Mad fact, there were no 0-0 draws in any of England’s top five leagues in the 3pm kick-offs. It wasn’t just me then.

Forest Green Rovers are struggling at the bottom of League Two, looking odds on for a return to the National League, they’re 2-0 down at home to promotion chasing Mansfield.

Peter Crosby has emailed in:

Re: ‘I’m struggling to keep up here!’ (16.16) - Welcome to the fast-paced, high octane world of MBM. It’s ripe for a movie adaptation. Who would you have play you? Clive Owen?

This is not my first clockwatch rodeo, but it’s been by far the busiest. As for who plays me, I’ll take Tom Hardy please.

More drama at St Mary’s, having got it back to 2-2, Southampton are behind again. Alex Matos has got a third for Huddersfield.

In games featuring sides at the top of League One, Portsmouth have taken the lead at Carlisle (long journey that) and Derby are 1-0 at home against Shrewsbury.

Quick Championship update, Leeds now lead 3-0, Norwich are now 2-1 ahead against QPR, Watford have halved Leicester’s lead thanks to Emmanuel Dennis and Sunderland are now 3-1 up against Plymouth.

Goal! Brighton 1-1 Tottenham (Sarr 61)

This has been coming, but it’s unlucky for Brighton. Dunk makes a great block to keep out a cutback to Richarlison but it falls to Sarr, who tucks it in.

Simon McMahon has a fitba preview from north of the border:

It’s the Scottish Cup round of 16 today, and a couple of Scottish Championship sides will be hopeful of repeating Morton’s heroics against Motherwell last night and upsetting their Premiership opponents, namely Big Dunc’s Inverness, who host Hibs, and Partick Thistle, who welcome bottom of the table Livingston. Less chance of any romance at Pittodrie, as Neil Warnock takes charge of Aberdeen at home for the first time against Bonnyrigg Rose, and Kilmarnock, who will be expected to beat Cove Rangers at home.

Who wants to feel old? On the bench today for Liverpool is Lewis Koumas, 18, son of ‘streets won’t forget’ Jason.

In the Championship, Ipswich twice trailed but earned a 2-2 draw at home against West Brom with Omari Hutchinson scoring in the 93rd minute to earn a point for the Tractor Boys.

Preamble

Five games kicking off at 3pm in the Premier League feels like something of a throwback and I certainly hope that is enough to keep to keep me busy with goal updates. Call me Jeff Stelling Simon Thomas.

Liverpool will be hoping Manchester City slip up in the early game against Everton but the Reds can retake top spot regardless of the result at the Etihad with a win over Burnley. Interestingly the Clarets have scored the opening goal in four of their last six visits to Anfield, but Liverpool have won eight of the past 10 Premier League meetings.

At the bottom end of the table, Luton have a chance to end the day as high as 15th if they beat Sheffield United at Kenilworth Road and other results go the Hatters’ way. With Nottingham Forest hosting Newcastle and Brentford travelling to Wolves it could be a big momentum swing for Rob Edwards’ side by the time Match of the Day comes on.

Spurs v Brighton is another game worth keeping an eye on as it looks like guaranteed goals. Fans of losing money can get the 0-0 at 29/1, but Spurs have scored in 35 consecutive matches and Brighton have kept two clean sheets in the league all season.

I will also be attempting to provide udpates on the big matches in the EFL before Taha Hashim takes over the minute-by-minute for the 5.30pm kick-off between Forest and Newcastle.

Team news to follow shortly.
