Nottingham community praise 'new green space' in former car park

People have praised a new sitting space that makes an area of Nottingham look more "put together". The new social area on Queensbridge Road comprises benches and chess tables, replacing the former car park.

Located outside the Vat and Fiddle pub, and near the Unity Square development, the recently revamped place has already been described as a "nice place to sit in the sun". The work started in September last year and finished earlier this year in March.

Christine Prassa, who works at Nottingham Trent University, 29, added: "Anything that has a green area and a sitting area is good for the city. It is a very nice area - it is near the station. I think it is a great idea."

Callum Tindall agreed, however, he had some criticism. The 30-year-old added: "Maybe I am being pessimistic, but I doubt anyone will bring their chess pieces to use the tables.

"But I agree mostly with the idea. Any new green space in Nottingham is good."

Luis Woodall, a student living in the area, said the sitting area would be nice in the summer. The 19-year-old added: "I think the area has improved a lot.

"It is somewhere to sit on. I think it will be nice in the summer.

"It looks more put together. It is a nice outside area - and people would like to sit here especially when it is sunny."

Harrison Atkinson, also a student living in the area, added: "I think it is annoying because it attracts skateboarders."

The 24-year-old added: "It is just a sitting area. It will be nice in the summer."

The Queensbridge Road scheme, close to the new Unity Square building, aims to create a wide area that accommodates walking, cycling and scooters, with most of the car traffic removed. On top of the seating space, it will include a "new safer shared pedestrian and cycle path with no through road".

New trees will be planted, and a new hedge to screen the road. Nottingham City Council said this would help reduce noise and air pollution.
