Nottingham City Council to discuss step forward for permanent police station in the Meadows

A key step forward could soon be taken to ensure a permanent police presence in a Nottingham suburb. Nottingham City Council will be discussing plans for a permanent neighbourhood police station to be created in the Meadows area, which will be located at the London Road fire station site.

Next Tuesday (November 22), the executive board will be discussing the effective partnership between Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, and the plans for an additional police presence in the Meadows area. It has been recommended that the council approves the occupational lease in accommodation at the fire station, which is currently housing the council's emergency planning function.

This accommodation would be leased to the Police and Crime Commissioner, who would then approve a lease back of the storage space at the site to the council, and the emergency planning function would return to Loxley House. This would allow for police to be situated at the fire station, and this increased presence would support the council's corporate priorities in relation to community safety.

The agenda states: "In February, the council informally considered a report outlining an in principle approach from the Police and Crime Commissioner to acquire the council’s lease of its accommodation in London Road fire station on terms to be agreed. The London Road accommodation houses the council’s emergency planning function (EPF).

"The police acquisition would establish a permanent police presence in the Meadows area of the city, through creating a local neighbourhood police station, and assist the police in rationalising their existing accommodation." Further discussions will take place regarding this, and a feasibility study to relocate the function to Loxley House has begun.

Additionally, detailed negotiations have been undertaken with the fire authority and the Police and Crime Commissioner. The proposals will be considered and discussed further at the board meeting later this month.

A potential target date for the completed transaction and relocation for the EPF has been set as March 31, 2023.
