Nottingham Christmas Market visitors and traders say cold weather won't stop them

Visitors and traders at Nottingham's Christmas Market say they won't let the cold weather stop them - and that it just makes it "feel more Christmassy." Temperatures have been dropping throughout the week in the city, with a high of just 3C on Saturday and 2C forecast on Sunday.

Teaching assistant, Donna Harris, 57, of Derby, was visiting the market with her daughter. She said: "My daughter's found it a bit cold, but it just think it's nice and festive.

"It's lovely, it's just really nice and the stalls are all lovely." When asked if the colder weather had affected their visit, she replied: "I don't think so no."

Finance worker Neve Pears, 24, of Doncaster, said: "I think it's great. I think it's better than it is cold, and it just makes it feel more Christmassy."

Maureen Royle, 70, retired and from Manchester, was in Nottingham visiting family. She said: "We are visiting our granddaughter who is at the university here.

"This market is a big bonus for us as Manchester's market isn't as good this year. We went in a really unusual pub called the Jerusalem and we found it really interesting."

Andrea Pembleton, 53, was also visiting family in the area with her husband. She said: "I think the ice rink has really changed from the last time we visit. It's great, but I would not want to be here in another hour or so as Nottingham is getting a bad reputation at night."

Andrea explained that they had tried food from different stalls, and that this kept them warm. Many traders at the market have also been feeling the chill.

Lucas Coughlan, owner of The Cherry Tree, said: "I would say definitely during the week I have noticed that people are getting up later due to the cold in the morning, but in the evening its great. You definitely notice it more during the day.

"It's my first time, and it's going really well, It's been busy especially at the weekends. It's good and you get to socialise with people in a different area, it's a good community feeling."

Owner of Twilly and Hide, Sue Hernsby, 68, of Norfolk, said: "It is busy today, it is getting colder I suppose but I keep smiling and everyone else keeps smiling and gets on with it. I'm out at half six in the morning setting up and it's very very cold, but by the time we get started and moving around we forget about it."

Jane Myrie, 65, of West Bromwich, who owns Magic Mead, said the cold weather was encouraging more people to try her mead. Jane said: "It's great when it's cold as our mead warms people up, so for me its OK.

"It's particularly cold in the morning but not too bad in the evening as it's only half six when we close or eight o'clock on weekends. It's been really good so far, it's our fifth year here."
