Nottingham burger which 'never leaves diners disappointed' could be named best in the country

A big juicy burger with a quirky twist at a Nottingham restaurant has made it into the finals of a national competition. The Rump Rub from BOHNS Best Burgers is one of 16 of the finest in the country in the revered National Burger Awards.

It's a spicy, fruity jam that makes the burger stand out from the crowd. It might sound odd but it really works, said founder Thomas Bohn, who opened his restaurant in Broad Street, Hockley, in 2018. He will compete in a live cook-off at Islington Metal Works in London, in the hope that his signature burger creation will be crowned the best in the UK.

He said: "The Rump Rub is, without doubt, a customer favourite and has been since opening the restaurant. It delivers a combination of spice flavours from our very own rump rub mayonnaise with an additional subtle sweetness and spice kick from our jalapeno and raspberry jam. Generally, the initial first reaction from customers is “how does jam work on a beef burger?' until they taste it. People are amazed how well it works and are never left disappointed.

"We pride ourselves on sourcing local quality ingredients which are prepared fresh every day. Using organic beef mince with the perfect fat content we complement the beef with our own brand of seasonings and homemade sauces which deliver unique flavours you cannot get from ready made bought in produce. BOHNS are not just your standard burger joint."

Now in its eighth year, the contest will see restaurant chefs and street food traders go head to head on April 20. This year’s line-up includes former finalist MEATliquor, and high street brands Bleecker and Burger & Lobster.

On top of the signature round, chefs will take part in a technical show-down that will see them create a burger from a specific selection of ingredients supplied by event sponsors in a bid to be crowned Burger Chef of the Year, as well as a meat-free burger round sponsored by The Vegetarian Butcher. Winners will be chosen by a hand-picked selection of esteemed industry judges.

Genna Ash-Brown, editor of Dine Out Magazine, which organises and runs the event, said: "Burgers have been a firm favourite among Brits for decades, with their popularity soaring throughout the pandemic – so much so that they have been confirmed as the nation’s most ordered lockdown dish.

"We were thrilled to see so many high-calibre recipes submitted for this year’s National Burger Awards, though it certainly didn’t make shortlisting an easy job! It’s always a joy to see familiar faces return and just as much of a pleasure to welcome new challengers into the ring. We can’t wait bring these awesome businesses together and see those sizzling patties start flippin’!”
