Notre Dame Veteran QB Makes Transfer Portal Decision After Spring Game

Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner announced Tuesday he is entering the transfer portal just days after the team’s spring game. ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to break the news and added Buchner is open to returning to the Fighting Irish if he doesn’t like his options.

“I love Notre Dame. The people, and especially my teammates, are what makes this place special to me,” Buchner wrote in his announcement on Twitter. “I have decided to enter the transfer portal in order to explore my options, and decide what is best for my future.”

Buchner confirmed that Notre Dame is remaining as an option as he explores the portal.

The signal-caller began the 2022 season as the team’s starter but injured his shoulder in just the second game of the season against Marshall. He would go on to miss 10 of the team’s 13 games but was named MVP in Notre Dame’s 45–38 victory over South Carolina in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl where he threw for 273 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

But with the arrival of Wake Forest graduate transfer Sam Hartman this past January, Buchner was going to be in a quarterback battle from the get-go heading into the spring. This past weekend, Hartman went 13-for-16 for 189 yards and two touchdowns, while Buchner went 8-for-18 passes for 44 yards, no TDs and one interception.

He entered this past season as a junior, but he’ll have three years of eligibility left since he played in just three games in 2022 season as a sophomore, which makes him eligible for a redshirt season.
