'Nothing else like it' - New Nottingham Forest book Freed From Desire captures imagination of fans

A new Nottingham Forest book celebrating promotion to the Premier League is attracting huge interest among fans.

Reds supporter Simon Bristow has produced a photo anthology of last season which does not feature a single shot of action on the picture. Instead, every photo captures Forest supporters at games and travelling to and from stadiums as Bristow captures fan culture and memories of an incredible season.

Posting under Our Glorious Banners on social media, Bristow's book Freed From Desire in honour of the club's Wembley anthem, has sold in huge numbers.

An initial run of 1,000 copies immediately sold out and when a second run was announced the Forza Garibaldi website crashed as soon as they went on sale through the fan group.

Bristow, who used to work in the Forest marketing department, is not making any money from the book, with 50 percent of the profits going to Forza Garibaldi and 50 percent going to the Robin Hood Fund, which distributes money to Nottinghamshire charities.

"I became a bit of a hobbyist," Bristow told the latest Garibaldi Red Podcast. "I reached a point where I'd been following the club and working for them for a 30 plus year period and I just needed a bit of a different match day. I've always worked in creative fields and I was finding it a bit mundane. It's probably linked to when we were rubbish to be fair.

"I found it being a drag getting up at 7am to go to Swansea, Charlton or wherever it was. I was inspired by Soccer Bible and football fan photography fan accounts on Instagram. I just love the culture of football.

"You want to see players celebrating and those great scenes, but there's great scenes in the stands too. Fans get a hell of a lot of bad press but there's this wonderful community.

"There's nothing else like it in life like the celebrating a goal. Collectively we lose our heads in that moment. I thought there was a chance to do something that captures all those moments which you don't see on a match day.

"I'd never thought about selling anything like prints. After Wembley a few people said I had to do something. I started the book about six or seven times but didn't really know where to go with it.

"As we got towards the World Cup break I thought it wasn't a bad time to do it with our form picking up. I thought if I was ever going to do something then this was the time."
