'Nothing beats that' - Bodvarsson, Iredale & Dempsey lead Bolton dressing room view of Burton win

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson paid tribute to the Bolton Wanderers fans for helping him after scoring the dramatic injury time winner against Burton Albion.

Dapo Afolayan and Aaron Morley both saw efforts go off target in the early stages as Wanderers started brightly. But the Whites were unable to carve out many clear cut opportunities in a frustrating first half they had much of the ball for against a Burton side which struggled to create much.

After the break, despite Wanderers continuing to dominate but creating few opportunities to speak of, the visitors took the lead. Sam Hughes headed home off the far post from Terry Taylor's corner.

Amadou Bakayoko struck as full-time approached to level for the hosts past Ben Garratt. Kieran Lee hit the post in stoppage time and Conor Bradley had an effort saved, but Bodvarsson fired home through a crowded penalty area after the Brewers failed to clear a corner and hand Wanderers a huge three points which sees the Whites now fifth in the table.

Speaking after the win, the Iceland international was initially lost for words after his winner deep into injury time. But he spoke about his goal, the standards and pressure at Wanderers, and how the fanbase are the best of his playing career.

Bodvarsson said: "What can you say? I don’t know what to say, really, just to get the goal in the last second of the game, nothing beats that as a football player. It is just a fantastic feeling and I still have a bit of adrenaline.

“It was such a massive win for us. We were in a tiny bit of a rut, if you can say so, the away games against Cheltenham and Forest Green and then the game against Barnsley was kind of average. It is nice to get two wins in a row now, it is a boost for the squad.

“I was anticipating the ball coming to me, so when it did I just had to compose myself, breathe and hit the target. Fortunately it went in, and I can’t remember the rest.

“It is a massive club, isn’t it? We have high standards and goals in our mind, try to be in the top six, try to get promoted. We have that on our shoulders.

“It is an added pressure on a positive scale and should bring a bit more out of yourself than before. I think the main key is being consistent. When we lost two in a row it was just important to get back as quickly as possible.

“It is massive. We were a bit better later on and have some different variety coming from the bench, players who can be a bit more direct because we weren’t really finding the passes. It was kind of a Plan B and I think Baka was brilliant when he came on, gave us good energy. It was so important to get the win.

“The manager basically called us (Bodvarsson and Bakayoko) both over before we went on and said ‘get us a goal, get us higher up the pitch’ and to add some energy.

“It is just the best fanbase I have had in my career. They have welcomed me since day one as I have said a million times before. It helps me so much."

Other members of the Bolton squad took to social media to have their say on the dramatic win. Taking to Twitter, Jack Iredale wrote: "No quit in this team. Not pretty but got the job done. Buzzing for Baka and the ice man too."

Kyle Dempsey wrote: "I’ll say it again great character from the team!! We keep going until the end. We keep the momentum going. Below my standards but continue to work hard to get back to my best!!"
