Notes on chocolate: in praise of ice-cream balls and chunky nut bars

Thinking of my garden swing seat and hot days ahead (I’m hopeful), let me tell you about Little Moons. These are funny little ice-cream balls in varying flavours, in a chewy rice flour (mochi) dough. I love mochi balls; one of my favourite desserts is chocolate mochi, which you can sometimes get in Japanese restaurants. I love the gelatinous texture.

But these are ice-creams and easier to find. There are lots of flavours, but two chocolate ones, one just Belgian Chocolate, one Belgian Chocolate and Hazelnuts (the moniker Belgian chocolate makes me laugh since cocoa is only grown near the equator and certainly not in Belgium). You can find them in supermarkets, £5 for six. Let them chambré for five minutes before eating.

I’ve got an absolute corker of a bar if you like dark milks and nuts: Lumi’s The Nuts bar, £6/100g. It’s 39% single origin Ecuadorian milk with big pieces of caramelised almonds. I love the chunkiness, the packaging (just brown paper) and the taste. It’s everything you want a nutty milk chocolate to be.

While you’re there, The Blonde One, £6/100g, is also wonderful – caramelised white with roasted pistachios and sour cherries, so brilliantly put together. Peta Leith, the woman behind the brand, is a professional pastry chef and I’m really interested to work my way through the collection.

The postage (a big bugbear among readers, I know) is also relatively reasonable. I have cancelled many an online purchase because of the postage costs. I recently bought from Lumi and paid just £2.90 postage.
