Notes on chocolate: Halloween treats too good to share

It is two weeks to Halloween and this will probably be my only Halloween mention, but I really liked Eponine’s box of nine beautiful little chocolates (£20), all of them looking like jewels. The flavours are Halloween-ish themed and include a Treat (smores) and Trick (mango, habanero and toasted corn); there’s also apple, bonfire caramel, maple-pecan, and fresh ginger ganache. On 31 October, if you prefer to sit in with the curtains drawn and a good movie, consider buying these for yourself.

I recently met Björn of Mike and Becky, a Brussels-based bean to bar chocolate maker. I wrote about how much I loved their dark milk in August. Björn is the Becky half of the duo. Anyway, he was very thankful for the custom he received off the back of that mention and it’s really thanks to all my lovely readers who go forth and purchase the recommendations: it does make a big difference to small companies, so thank you. He gave me a not-yet-in-the-UK bar of their 60% milk with coffee (60g), which has a charming spelling mistake on the front and is absolutely delicious. Lucky you if you live in Belgium, you can buy it for €6.50. Hopefully, we’ll see it here soon.

Closer to home is Manchester- based Dormouse Chocolate’s 70% Ugandan bar (£6, 70g). This bar is super lively with rich fruit notes. Money from sales goes to the Rainbow Railroad charity, which works in Uganda to help members of the LGBTQI+ community affected by Uganda’s laws against homosexuality (which are very harsh) and, as it uses cocoa beans from Uganda, it is also supporting the local community.
