'Not too sure' - Dietmar Hamann shares reason for major doubt over Liverpool's Arthur Melo transfer

Dietmar Hamann has admitted he is ‘not too sure’ about Liverpool’s signing of Arthur Melo – with the Brazilian unlikely to fill the club’s midfield goalscoring void.

Melo looks set to join the Reds on a season-long loan from Italian giants Juventus, with no option or obligation to buy come next summer. The 26-year-old flew over from Turin early on Thursday morning to complete a medical and finalise the move.

Those in charge at Anfield finally kicked into gear regarding their pursuit of midfield reinforcements – likely influenced by Jordan Henderson’s injury in the 2-1 win against Newcastle on Wednesday evening. But ex-Liverpool midfielder Hamann has questioned whether Melo fits the bill on Merseyside.

“I'm not too sure he's the player they need because I would have liked a more offensive player who gets them goals from midfield because they just don't get enough open play goals from midfield,” Hamann told Sky Sports. “You know, he can play as an 8 but he's more of a holding player and I'm not too sure he's a player that brings the best out of Liverpool.”

Melo scored just one goal in 63 appearances for the Old Lady across all competitions – a sign that Klopp may not have signed him to add goals. Liverpool also made a last-minute approach for Aston Villa’s holding midfielder Douglas Luiz, although the Midlands side remain insistent on keeping their man.
