'Not sure' - Darwin Nunez doubt shared by Liverpool great after Brentford miss

Robbie Fowler is unsure whether Darwin Nunez will develop into a prolific Liverpool goalscorer.

Another missed opportunity against Brentford saw the Uruguayan scuff an effort over the bar from six yards. Critics - mainly from rival clubs - have ripped into Nunez for his lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.

Comparisons were unfairly made between himself and Erling Haaland, with Liverpool and Manchester City uncharacteristically signing out-and-out strikers last summer. The Norwegian has exploded since moving to England, scoring a staggering 51 goals, while Nunez has bagged 15.

At 23, few Liverpool supporters are writing their £75million off just yet. Previous arrivals - including his compatriot Luis Suarez - took time to settle before endearing themselves as a fans’ favourite at Anfield.

However, former cult hero Fowler has questioned whether Nunez has the attributes to become an elite goalscorer. He told Premier League Productions: “Up to now he is (too wasteful). I said before the show, he will be a player.

“He will be a handful and he will take chances. And he will score goals. But to the level Liverpool fans think he will score the goals? I am not sure we will see that.”
