'Not quite Piers' - Man United fans react after Bruno Fernandes given goal ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United fans have mocked both Cristiano Ronaldo and Piers Morgan after the former thought he had given Portugal the lead against Uruguay.

During a tight encounter in Lusail, the Portuguese managed to get themselves in front with what at first glance seemed to be a goal for Ronaldo but was later credited to Bruno Fernandes. The United midfielder's ball into the box was inviting for the 37-year-old who leapt highest to attempt to flick the ball goalward.

As the ball alluded Sergio Rochet in the Uruguay goal, Ronaldo wheeled away with his hand in the air claiming the goal. However, on further inspection, the forward did not touch the ball and the goal has since been credited by FIFA to Fernandes.

If the goal had been given to Ronaldo he would have equaled the Portugal goalscoring record with Eusebio. Instead, it was Fernandes who made history of his own by scoring his first-ever goal at a World Cup which he followed up with his second from the spot in stoppage time.

Many had thought that Ronaldo had got a touch with Morgan prematurely celebrating on Twitter. However, supporters were quick to poke fun at both the 37-year-old and the TalkTV presenter in the aftermath.

Morgan has a long-standing friendship with Ronaldo which led to the veteran British journalist securing an exclusive interview with the forward earlier this month. During the conversation, Ronaldo criticised Erik ten Hag, the Glazers and former teammates Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney in a scathing attack.

In response to the appearance on TalkTV, United opted to part ways with Ronaldo by 'mutual agreement'. The decision means that the ex-Red is the only free agent at this year's tournament in Qatar.
