Trent Alexander-Arnold has referenced Manchester City's Champions League struggles in recent seasons to show Liverpool can still win a quadruple this season.
With the Champions League knockout stages getting underway this week, both Liverpool and City get a break from the Premier League title race that has the Blues nine points ahead of their rivals having played a game more.
City are hopeful of winning a treble this season as they are in pole position to win a fourth Premier League in five years, while they will be confident of replicating last season's journey to the Champions League final to try and go one step further. Ultimately they fell short against Chelsea in 2021, but manager Pep Guardiola and his players have made no secret of City's desire to finally lift the European Cup.
Over at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp's side have been neck-and-neck with City in the league, winning their first Premier League in 2020. They won the Champions League a year earlier, and followed that up with the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, but have struggled in the domestic cup competitions while City have been hugely successful in that area. Liverpool face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final this year, hoping to win a first domestic cup since 2012.
With a quadruple technically still on for Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold says his side are confident knowing three of the possible four trophies this season are still in their own hands.
And he said there is no disappointment that Liverpool haven't won more under Jurgen Klopp as they have won the 'biggest and best' titles on offer - then making a reference to City's Champions League struggled.
“We want to keep as much pressure on as we can, winning the game in hand gets it to six points and then keep winning," he said of the Premier League title race.
"It’s not in our hands so we can only win our games. We have to make sure we are in a position to pounce if they slip up at some point.
“I think cup competitions are always wide open, you see upsets all the time and shocks. I wouldn’t say anyone is favourite. Leagues are a bit different when you look at squad depth and there are favourites. Cup competitions are a different ball game.
“We don't feel disappointed that we haven’t won enough trophies as the ones we have won are the biggest and best you can get your hands on. Not making any digs but you look at Man City’s amazing team and they haven’t been able to lift the Champions League.
“They won a couple of Prems but haven’t been able to win the Champions League. We've won both over the last few years and it shows you we can do it in both competitions.”
He continued: “As a team we expect ourselves to go as far as we can in competitions. Looking at it now, there is only the league that is not in our hands.
“We believe we can beat anyone on our day if we get it right. It is only the league and anything can happen. The other three competitions we believe we are able to win them.
“There is an expectation now, as a team and players, to win trophies. One trophy a season minimum is what we have to achieve. With the squad and manager we have we should be winning trophies. It is expected now."
