'Not hanging my hat' - Roy Keane gives scathing assessment of Liverpool target Mason Mount

Roy Keane believes Liverpool target Mason Mount has "gone off the boil" as Manchester United reportedly battle for the Chelsea midfielder.

The England international potentially made his final steps on the Stamford Bridge turf after their 1-1 draw with Newcastle United on the final day of the season. Mount has been in contractual loggerheads with the London club for a number of months which has cast his future into doubt going into the last year of his contract.

Liverpool are set for a busy summer with manager Jurgen Klopp hinting at a hectic period at Anfield. The 24-year-old is under consideration from the Reds, the ECHO understands, but reports recently suggest Erik ten Hag's side have nudged their way in to become front runners for the midfielder.

Mount has missed the closing stages of Chelsea's season through injury but in a disappointing campaign in west London, he - like many others - has struggled as they finished in the bottom half. Manchester United have been linked with moves for Harry Kane and Declan Rice as well as the Cobham academy graduate.

While the prospect of signing the Spurs forward, who broke 30 goals for the season on Sunday, is exciting. The thought of Mount is less so for Keane.

The former United captain explained: "Listen, they’re going to be linked with lots of players but the one that would excite you really is Kane.

"He’s [Mount] just gone off the boil a little bit. He can bounce back and he’s got quality, I was raving about him a few years ago but he’s just gone missing the last year or two.

"Again, one or two injuries and the fact he can’t get in the Chelsea team I wouldn’t be hanging my hat too much on him to improve United and close the gap.

"I think he’s a good player but would he improve Man United? I’m not so sure. I think Rice would, Rice would be a decent signing, but in terms of the excitement and goalscoring, I’d go all-in for Kane. But, can I see Spurs selling to Man United? Very, very difficult."
