'Not all bad' - Former Liverpool man issues verdict on West Ham season amid Brentford prediction

Mark Lawrenson says “it’s not all been bad” for West Ham United this season as David Moyes’ side edges closer to a European final amid their battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

It has been a disappointing campaign domestically for a Hammers side who finished in the top seven in the last two years. Moyes’ men struggled to distance themselves from the drop zone but look more than likely to stay up as they head into their final three league games seven points clear of the bottom three.

Despite a frustrating Premier League campaign, the same cannot be said in the Europa Conference League. The Hammers are unbeaten in Europe, winning 12 of their 13 fixtures so far, including the first-leg of their semi-final clash with AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, winning 2-1 at the London Stadium.

This weekend, their focus will be on guaranteeing their Premier League safety and at least one more win from their last three games should do it. However, both Chris Sutton and Paul Merson do not believe the Hammers will pick up any points against Brentford this Sunday, with the former Chelsea and Arsenal men predicting a 2-0 win for the Bees at the London Stadium.

Thomas Frank’s side have had a superb second campaign in the top flight and are on course for a top half finish, currently sitting 9th in the table with three games left. Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson admits it has been a “fantastic season” for Brentford but he reckons the Hammers can claim at least a point from their trip across London this Sunday.

“I fancy a draw here,” Lawrenson told Paddy Power, predicting a 1-1 draw. “It just underlines what a fantastic season Brentford have had and West Ham could be in the final of the Europa Conference League by next week so it’s not all been bad for them.”
