Norwich City are set to appoint David Wagner as head coach to succeed Dean Smith, who was sacked by the Championship club last week. The 51-year-old German led Huddersfield Town to the Premier League in May 2017 and has previously worked with Norwich’s sporting director, Stuart Webber.

Under Smith, Norwich have dropped to 11th in the Championship and picked just one point from their last four games. The Canaries next match is against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Peterborough have appointed Darren Ferguson for his fourth spell in charge after the League One side sacked Grant McCann.

Eighth-placed Posh have lost five of their last seven league games and just once in the league since October. McCann took charge in February 2022 after leaving Hull but  could not prevent the club from being relegated from the Championship.

“With the squad that we have, where we are in the league table is not where we expected and we feel if we are going to give ourselves a chance of a promotion run, now is the time to make that change," said the Peterborough chairman, Darragh MacAnthony.

Ferguson will return on a contract until the end of the season, having last managed Peterborough before McCann arrived last year. “He has won five promotions in his career, he will be going for number six and we are delighted that he has agreed to return," MacAnthony added. "It is business as usual and on we go.” PA Media

Wagner’s last club was Young Boys of the Swiss Super League, whom he left in March last year, and has had a spell in Germany with Schalke after leaving Huddersfield three years ago.
