Norway Considers Border Fence With Russia For Security Enhancement

Norway is contemplating the construction of a fence along its 198-kilometer border with Russia to enhance security measures. The idea was proposed by Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl, who highlighted the potential benefits of using technology and sensors within the fence to detect any unauthorized border crossings.

The Norwegian government is exploring various options to bolster security in the Arctic north region, including the possibility of erecting a fence, increasing border staff, or enhancing monitoring capabilities. The Storskog border station, the sole official crossing point from Russia to Norway, has seen minimal illegal border crossing attempts in recent years.

In response to the evolving security situation, Norway is prepared to swiftly close the border if necessary. Minister Enger Mehl drew inspiration from Finland's decision to close its entire 1,340-kilometer border with Russia following a surge in third-country migrants entering the country without proper documentation.

Finland's initiative to construct fences equipped with advanced surveillance technology along its border with Russia has influenced Norway's considerations. The aim is to better monitor and control any potential migrant crossings, particularly around designated crossing points.

The existing fence at the Storskog border station, erected in 2016 after a significant influx of migrants from Russia, spans 200 meters in length and stands at 3.5 meters in height. The proposal to extend fencing along parts or the entirety of the Norway-Russia border has garnered support from local authorities, including police chief Ellen Katrine Hætta in Finnmark county.

While Norway is a NATO member and part of the EU's Schengen area, which allows for free movement across participating countries, it is not a member of the European Union. The potential border fence project reflects Norway's commitment to safeguarding its borders and ensuring national security in collaboration with neighboring countries.
