Northumberland's Kielder ospreys get their own YouTube channel

Some of Northumberland's best-known temporary residents will have their YouTube channel for the first time since returning to the county 14 years ago.

A camera on nest 7 will be trained on the Kielder Forest ospreys, with the birds of prey returning to Northumberland for the warmer months since 2009. High definition cameras have been installed on his and other nests at Kielder Water and Forest Park over recent years, but this is the first time they have been accessible online.

Live streams are still available on large screens at Kielder Castle Visitor Centre, along with Tower Knowe Visitor Centre. Volunteers from Northumberland Wildlife Trust are also at the sites on Wednesdays to give more background on the amber-listed birds.

Alex Maclennan, Forestry England's Recreation and public affairs manager for Northumberland, said: "Ospreys have been a huge success story in Kielder so it’s wonderful we can now share views across the world. Mum and dad on nest 7 are proving to be exceptional parents, keeping the youngsters warm, and well fed with a regular supply of trout.

"It’s compelling viewing and the live feed means people can follow the amazing story back home. It will also encourage more people to come to Kielder Water and Forest Park to experience this habitat and find out more about our incredible wildlife."

Once again, nest 7 is one of the most productive in the forest and is currently home to three healthy chicks. The parents first bred together at Kielder in 2020 and before this year have produced six offspring.

The female was born in Tain in the Highlands in 2017 while the male is not ringed, but has been in Kielder Forest for at least five years and previously bred with another partner before leaving her for his current mate.

The Kielder Osprey Project is a partnership between Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust, Forestry England, Northumberland Wildlife Trust, Northumbrian Water and Wild Intrigue. Osprey Watch takes place at Tower Knowe at Kielder Water every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday to August 13 between 11am - 4.30pm, with visitors offered views of the nest via scopes and a close up on nest 7 via a camera in the cabin.
