Many of us have heard the word hygge, but what does it actually mean?
Added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017, it's a defining characteristic of Danish culture and a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. Though there's no direct English translation, it might be simpler just to say cosy!
And one Northumberland lodge has been chosen as one of the best Scandi-style escapes in the UK, with staying there said to summon up that hygge feeling. Oat Grass Lodge, two miles from Bamburgh, has been designed to have a fresh contemporary feel contrasting with its "dramatic" setting on a former whinstone quarry.

Guardian Travel raved about the property, which sleeps up to six guests and two dogs. Its floor to ceiling windows allow for lots of light inside, while a short walk through the woodland opens up some of the most spectacular sights on the Northumberland Coast AONB, such as the hulking Bamburgh Castle or the Farne Islands.
Of Oat Grass Lodge, the Guardian wrote: "With the Norman stronghold of Bamburgh Castle looming impressively over Northumberland’s spectacular coast, this is the place to pair blustery seaside walks with cosy afternoons in front of the fire in this light, airy lodge designed with clean Scandinavian lines.
"Floor-to-ceiling windows in the open-plan kitchen-diner and sleek lounge bring vibrant natural colours into the cream-and-grey rooms, while upstairs the bedrooms have a soothing, sanctuary-like feel with soft hues, woollen throws and rugs, and polished wood floors."
