Northumberland County Show to return in June after two year hiatus

For years, the Northumberland County Show has been a highlight of the county's social calendar, and the family event is back after a two-year absence.

Preparations for the show, which takes place in June, are well underway, with thousands of visitors, volunteers, competitors and traders from all across the North East, Cumbria, Scotland and Yorkshire expected.

The one day agricultural event is organised and run by the Tynedale Agricultural Society and has taken place in the grounds and parklands surrounding the home of Lord and Lady Allendale, Bywell Hall, near Stocksfield since 2013.

In a break from tradition, the show will be moved from its usual Bank Holiday Monday date to Friday June 3 in honour of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The main arena at this year's event will host events such as heavy horse turnouts, a display of farming vintage and modern vehicles, before the day's main event - the Inter Hunt Relay.

Mr Mark Scandle, The Show's new Chairman, said: "We are delighted to have the show team back together again and we’re excited to be planning this year’s show, which due to the Queens Platinum Jubilee celebrations will now be on Bank Holiday Friday June 3 2022."

"It takes many months of intense work to organise an event of this scale, but we feel certain that the show will go ahead in a safe and secure way for all attending.

"The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations next year give us the perfect platform to plan for an extra-special Northumberland County Show. It is a break with tradition for the show to be held on Bank Holiday Friday, June 3 2022. With a two year break behind us, we will all have something very exciting to look forward to and it will be absolutely spectacular!"

Charles Raine, Director of youngsRPS, the company sponsoring The Show added: "The Northumberland Show is the jewel in the Country Shows calendar and this year proves to be even more momentous with it landing on Jubilee weekend.

"With the cancellation of both the 2020 and 2021 shows we are all eager to return bigger and better than before. The return of the show is creating a real buzz across Northumberland, more so with it this year being on Bank Holiday Friday, what better way to kick off Jubilee weekend celebrations with all of the family.”

“Visitors to the show will join us in celebrating not only the prime of the region's agricultural industry but also enjoy demonstrations, food, shopping and much, much more.”

The Northumberland County Show has only been cancelled five times in its history, which spans almost two centuries. Previously, it was cancelled in both world wars, during 2001's foot and mouth outbreak, and in 2020 and 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
