Northumberland castle named one of the most beautiful in Europe by Condé Nast Traveller

Standing atop the Whin Sill and overlooking one of the finest beaches in North East England, Bamburgh Castle is arguably Northumberland's most recognisable landmark.

And now it has been named one of the most beautiful castles in Europe by Condé Nast Traveller. Built in the eleventh century but with foundations dating back even further, the castle has been owned by the Armstrong family since 1894 and is set to become the North East's largest indoor Christmas attraction in the coming weeks.

It is a hugely popular tourist attraction for visitors to the county, as is the village of the same name which has been named Which? Magazine's best seaside town for the last two years. Bamburgh Beach was also been hailed as one of Europe's best by TripAdvisor earlier this year.

Of Bamburgh Castle, Condé Nast Traveller wrote: "Bamburgh Castle rises like a mirage over the white-sand beaches of Northumberland. The medieval castle dates as far back as the 5th century, and it has appeared in many stories and poems over the past several centuries. (Some scholars believe it even served as inspiration for Sir Lancelot’s castle in Arthurian legend.)

"More recently, it has appeared as a backdrop in films like Elizabeth (1998) and Macbeth (the Michael Fassbender version from 2015)."

Bamburgh Castle will also feature in the upcoming and untitled Indiana Jones film which is due out in 2023. Last summer, the castle was spotted 'ablaze' overnight during filming, while Harrison Ford enjoyed his time in the region cycling along the North East coast.
