Northern terminates ALL rail services in North West amid Storm Franklin mayhem

Rail operator Northern has announced ALL its train services in the North West and Greater Manchester have now been cancelled.

No trains will run across the network until at least 10.30am.

And Northern said the position might be extended further into Monday as a result of Storm Franklin.

Commuters are being warned not to go to railway stations, with the operator saying there are 'no alternatives' as fierce winds and heavy rain persist.

A spokesman blamed the 'severe weather' and said 'numerous incidents' on lines were being dealt with.

Nothern confirmed the rare move on Twitter.

They said: Due to the severe weather and numerous incidents, caused by Storm Franklin, we will be terminating all services in the North West.

"No further trains until at least 10.30am, and this might be extended.

"Do not attempt to travel, do not head to stations as there are no alternatives."

Northern confirmed multiple cases of fallen trees blocking tracks - and urged people not to travel.

They added: "There are multiple line closures, flooding, trees on lines and loss of power across the North West and Yorkshire.

"Our advice is not to attempt to travel as we are unable to provide alternative transport."

Two 'severe flood warnings' remain in place in Greater Manchester this morning as Storm Franklin continues to batter the UK.

The 'danger to life' warnings are in place for the River Mersey at East Didsbury and the River Mersey at West Didsbury and Northenden.

Residents living near those areas have been told to 'act now' and evacuate if told to do so.
