Northern Rail to sell train tickets for £1 in flash sale for September and October 2022 travel

Northern will put over one million train tickets on sale for £1 today.

The rail operator's flash sale will start at 10am. Bargain tickets for travel between Tuesday September 6 and Thursday October 20 will go on sale, although the cheapest fares will not always be available for popular routes.

Northern says the sale is a chance for passengers to enjoy breaks for less after the summer holidays. Its network includes Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, York, Lincoln and the Lake District, as well as the Tyne Valley Line in the North East and Cumbria. The sale travel period starts next week and ends just before the October half-term holidays.

Bookings for the £1 fare can be made online or through the Northern app while stocks last. These £1 tickets are for travel between Tuesday 6 September and Thursday 20 October 2022.

Mark Powles, customer and commercial director at Northern said: "Whether it’s for a weekend in the historic city of Chester, a night out in Newcastle; a day at the seaside in Scarborough, or a walking holiday in the Lake District - these fares will get you where you want to be for less. Tickets are on a first-come, first serve basis - so those looking to take advantage of these great £1 fares should book early to avoid disappointment. When they’re gone, they’re gone.”

Around 5 to 10% of Northern seats will have tickets up for grabs in the flash sale. As things stand, there are currently no rail strikes planned for September, but Aslef announced on August 25 that drivers working for Northern voted in favour of strike action, which could be held in September. The RMT union has also warned further strikes are likely.
