Northern Lights to be visible over Scotland tonight, Met Office says

THE Northern Lights are to be visible over Scotland tonight in a display that could leave stargazers awestruck.

The wonderful sight, which is set to be visible over Scotland and Northern England on the evening of Tuesday, April 15, is coming thanks to the arrival of a Coronal Mass Ejection.

If you want to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis tonight, here is everything you need to know.

When will the Northern Lights be visible in Scotland tonight?

According to the Met Office Space Weather forecast, the Northern Lights could be visible from 6pm until the morning of Wednesday, April 16.

The meteorological organisation said that the aurora is expected to remain at "normal background levels" until the arrival of a Coronal Mass Ejection on Tuesday evening.

It added that this is "likely to bring the auroral oval to northern parts of the UK and similar geomagnetic latitudes, with a chance of some visibility towards the northern horizon for much of England."

What is the Met Office weather forecast for Scotland tonight?

Discussing the weather for tonight, the Met Office said that "cloud cover over much of the UK will limit aurora viewings".

The organisation added that outbreaks of rain across western parts of the country will move northwards into Scotland overnight, causing some heavy cloud cover.

Cloudy conditions are also expected all over, including in places where the weather is predicted to be dry.

How to see the Northern Lights in Scotland tonight

Those wishing to see the Northern Lights in Scotland tonight will have a better chance in a place with very little light pollution.

You would ideally want to view the sight far from cities and large towns. It is for this reason that many opt to view it in places with less human activity.

There are a number of areas across Scotland that have become popular in recent years, including Galloway Forest Park.
