Northern Ireland weather warnings issued by Met Office

New weather warnings for Northern Ireland have been issued by the Met Office.

The first yellow thunderstorm warning comes into place at 11am on Friday and will remain in place until 6pm this evening.

It covers parts of Derry, Fermanagh and Tyrone.

The forecaster said heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some flooding and travel disruption.

A second thunderstorm warning has also been issued from 10am on Sunday morning until 9pm that night and covers all of Northern Ireland.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

Here's the weather outlook for the coming days:

Friday:

A cloudy morning with early morning rain in the north and west gradually clearing. Sunny spells developing towards midday, but heavy thundery showers also breaking out. These becoming confined to the west before dying out to give a sunny evening. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Tonight:

A dry and increasingly clear evening and start to the night. Cloud increasing in the early hours with a chance of heavy showers. Minimum temperature 14 °C.

Saturday:

A mostly cloudy morning with a chance of showers, but these mainly light. Increasingly sunny in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Scattered often heavy showers by day, mostly dry by night. Showers may be slow moving at times. Becoming a little cooler than recent days.
