Northern Ireland weather warning for snow and ice issued by Met Office

A weather warning for snow and ice in Northern Ireland has been issued by The Met Office.

The warning, which covers the majority of the region, comes into place at midday on Monday, January 16 until midday on Tuesday, January 17.

The forecaster said: "Snow showers will become more frequent through Monday, continuing to feed in on northwesterly winds overnight. Accumulations of a couple of centimetres are possible at low levels, with higher ground expected to see 5-10 cm in places. In addition, icy stretches are likely to form following showers"

What to expect, according to the Met Office

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

For Tuesday, the forecaster said: "Cold with some clear or sunny spells but also some sleet or snow showers in the north and west at first, spreading east later. Maximum temperature 3C."

And for the outlook for Wednesday to Friday, it's predicted to be "cold with some clear or sunny spells but also some sleet or snow showers, becoming dry with clear periods Thursday and into Friday".

Rain is expected to spread east late on Friday, the Met Office say.
