Northern Ireland weather: Warning for ice issued covering most of the country

A weather warning has been issued affecting most of Northern Ireland.

The yellow warning for ice comes into force from 8pm on Thursday, February 24, until 9am on Friday.

The Met Office said: "Icy stretches possible on untreated surfaces overnight."

A yellow weather warning for snow and lightening affecting Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh and Antrim is already in place until 8pm on Thursday.

Snow hit a number of areas in NI on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with school closures reported.

What to expect from 8pm on Thursday, according to the Met Office

  • Some icy patches could occur on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, perhaps leading to injuries or accidents

The forecaster said: "Further showers this evening, some wintry on high ground with gales for a time. The showers slowly easing overnight with winds easing. Some icy patches. Minimum temperature 1C."

And for Friday: "Mainly dry day, sunny spells in the morning and early afternoon then gradually clouding over. Freshening southwesterly winds, turning milder. Maximum temperature 8C."
