Northern Ireland weather latest as new warning for ice now in force

A new yellow weather warning for ice is now in place across Northern Ireland.

The warning issued by the Met Office came into effect Friday morning, March 10, and will remain in place until 10am on Saturday, March 11.

The forecaster said: "Ice is likely to be a hazard where snow has fallen overnight."

The Met Office added: "Whilst falling snow will clear from the south and east of the warning area in the next few hours, lying snow and ice will likely continue to be a hazard through the rest of this morning.

"Icy stretches should become confined to higher ground this afternoon, before temperatures fall below freezing widely this evening.

"This will lead to untreated surfaces left wet by snow melt becoming icy at all levels, with some disruption to travel likely."

On Friday morning, NI Road Policing and Safety said: "Please take extra care on the roads today especially on those which may not have been gritted.

"Clear your windscreen of ice and snow before you set off and remember to slow down and increase the distance between you and the car ahead."

For Friday's weather forcast, the Met Office said: "A dry and bright day for most parts with some lengthy spells of sunshine, but some patchy cloud with a few showers towards the north coast, wintry over the hills. Light mainly westerly winds. Maximum temperature 5C.

"Any showers across the north will die out during the evening, then all parts dry with some clear spells, leading to a widespread frost. Clouds increasing from the southwest later. Minimum temperature -5C."
