Northern Ireland weather: Further warning for snow and ice issued

A further weather warning for snow and ice in NI has been issued by the Met Office.

It's in place from midday on Tuesday, January 17 until midday on Wednesday, January 18 and the forecaster says "snow showers and icy stretches may cause some disruption".

The coldest temperature recorded overnight in Northern Ireland was in Katesbridge, County Down, where it reached minus 8.4C.

The prior warning was in place until midday today. A Met Office spokesperson said: "Snow showers will affect these areas through Tuesday afternoon and continue in many places overnight, and into Wednesday morning.

"Accumulations of a couple of centimetres are likely at low levels, with higher ground anywhere is the region potentially seeing 5-10 cm, and up to 15 cm for the higher ground in Northern Ireland. In addition, icy stretches are likely to form following showers."

It comes as Police Derry City and Strabane said 19 crashes were reported in the area since 5pm on Monday.

Posting on social media, a spokesperson said: "Please take care on the roads. We've had 19 reported road traffic collisions since 5pm yesterday through to this morning in areas across the city, in Strabane, Slaughtmanus & Donemana.

"If you’re driving please slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you."

For Tuesday's weather forecast, the Met Office said: "Some bright or sunny periods and scattered snow or hail showers, most frequent and occasionally heavy in the north and west. Drier in the southeast. Cold. Maximum temperature 3C."

And for tonight: "A mostly cloudy evening and night with frequent sleet and snow showers, turning to rain along the north coast later. Icy stretches. Moderate falls of snow on hills in north. Minimum temperature 0C."

Frequent wintry showers are expected on Wednesday morning. The forecaster says it'll be another cold day and the afternoon will be brighter and drier, with a maximum temperature of 4C.

The Met Office added: "Early showers on Thursday then dry. Cloudy on Friday with the chance of a little rain. Early rain on Saturday then dry, turning much milder."
