Northern Ireland weather forecast for the week ahead predicts heavy rain and thunder

The new working week is set to bring more unsettled conditions on the weather front.

There's plenty of rain in the forecast over the coming days along with a good deal of cloud but there will be some sunshine too.

While Monday got off to a dry but chilly start with some frost in places, the rest of this week is set to be milder with temperatures generally in double figures.

Here's what to expect over the next few days, according to the Met Office.

Tonight:

Cloud will continue to thicken through the evening with southerly winds strengthening. Outbreaks of rain spreading north in the early hours. Minimum temperature 3 °C.

Tuesday:

Heavy early morning rain eases before clearing late morning. Bright or sunny spells in the afternoon with scattered heavy showers. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Cloudy and breezy on Wednesday with heavy rain spreading north. Heavy, thundery showers on Thursday. Lighter showers on Friday.

UK long range weather forecast - Friday 31 March - Sunday 9 April

Some dry weather at first in parts of the north and east on Friday, but heavy rain and strong winds moving in from the west or southwest through the day. Some uncertainty in the details but the heaviest rain and strongest winds most likely affecting parts of the south and west.

Thereafter, a predominantly unsettled pattern continues, with showers or longer spells of rain for many, although these interspersed with brief drier or brighter spells. By the second week of April, perhaps the greater chance of drier conditions will be across the north, albeit with some overnight frost.

Further south, a higher likelihood of further wet weather at times. Overall, temperatures probably averaging out close to normal.
