Northern Ireland weather: 'Arctic blast' set to take hold this week with snow predicted

Temperatures are set to plunge across the UK this week due to an "arctic blast", with snow even predicted for Northern Ireland.

Forecasters expect that the cold snap will really start taking hold from Wednesday, with temperatures expected to be around the freezing mark and dipping down to sub-zero overnight.

It comes as lower temperatures were experienced across the UK on Saturday into Sunday, with lows of between between 1 and 4 degrees evident on Sunday morning.

Across Northern Ireland, "wintry showers" and "overnight frosts" are expected later in the week as a flow of northerly wind will start to cause temperatures to dip as a cold front begins to move in.

Despite this, however, sunshine is still forecast for many parts of the UK, with a mostly dry but freezing week ahead.

Temperatures are set to stay in the single digits throughout the week, with the Met Office predicting highs of 6 to 7 degrees early in the week.

However, as the week continues, those highs will drop to around 4 and 5 degrees into Thursday and Friday. Overnight lows are expected to reach -2 degrees.

In parts of northern Scotland, the Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for snow on Wednesday.
