Northern Ireland fans agreed on one positive from Euro qualifying misery

Northern Ireland fans didn't have much to cheer during the recent Euro qualifiers.

Back-to-back 1-0 defeats to Denmark and Kazakhstan were devastating blows to Michael O'Neill's hopes of reaching the 2024 finals.

It means Northern Ireland have picked up just one win from their opening four games, with those three points claimed against Group H minnows San Marino.

But it isn't all doom and gloom, right?

A raft of injuries saw O'Neill draft in a number of Under 21 players, and the youngsters did themselves proud with two energetic performances at Parken Stadium and Windsor Park.

And while the results didn't go their way, the experience will stand these players in good stead.

Isaac Price, Shea Charles, Trai Hume, Dale Taylor and Callum Marshall were just some of the fledgling talent to get game time. Conor Bradley is another star of the future while Irish League representative Conor McMenamin was a live spark when he came on against Kazakhstan.

We asked fans on Facebook to pick out one positive from the double-header, and many agreed it was the displays from the youngsters that give room for optimism.

And one player in particular caught the eye - Shea Charles.

The Manchester City academy midfielder has now earned eight senior caps, and he still only 19 years old.

David said: "Shea Charles and a few younger players getting a chance."

Gareth also picked Shea Charles, with Matthew agreeing, with the reply: "Beat me to it."

Scott also singled out Charles for praise, while Pam said: "Three teenagers starting v Denmark and equipping themselves well."

Sammy agreed, adding: "Young guys getting a chance."

Naomi also praised recent MBE honours recipient Jonny Evans, saying: "Young guys coming through! Jonny Evans captain and getting the MBE.."

The County Antrim SuperCupNI Facebook account picked out former tournament graduate Callum Marshall who was so unlucky in having a dream goal ruled out against Denmark.

Francis also picked out the West Ham United Academy striker.

Meanwhile, Jim said: "If we keep playing our young players as much as possible, then they will be the backbone of the team and we will have a bright future, as frustrating as these past two results have been, be patient with this young team."

Eddie adopted a philosophical approach to his answer. He said: "The Northern Ireland fans were brilliant as always!! Unfortunately the current squad, with the exception of 2 or 3 Players, simply aren't good enough to compete at International level."
