Northern Ireland counsellor's tips on managing anxiety

Anxiety affects millions of people worldwide.

It is a feeling of unease, nervousness, or worry about an event or situation with an uncertain outcome. Anxiety can manifest in a variety of ways - common ways anxiety can present for a person could be panic attacks, social anxiety, phobias, generalised anxiety disorder.

Anxiety can be overwhelming, it can be debilitating for those who suffer with it and spill into many areas of our lives, causing behavioural problems, unhelpful thinking styles or avoidance.

It is natural to feel some level of anxiety at some point in our week, anxiety is a message from the body that we need to be cautious. It can be a form of protection, therefore at times, it can be a helpful emotion. However high level anxiety can have a negative impact in our lives.

The symptoms of anxiety can be physical, psychological, or both. Physical symptoms may include sweating, trembling, nausea, racing heart, shortness of breath, and muscle tension. Psychological symptoms may include excessive worry, restlessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating and trouble sleeping.

Anxiety can be caused by a variety of factors - such as genetics, brain chemistry, life experiences, and environmental factors. Traumatic events and negative life experiences can also contribute to the development of anxiety disorders.

There are several ways to manage anxiety, such as therapy, medication, relaxation techniques and lifestyle changes. Therapy can that help people change their negative thought patterns and behaviours that contribute to anxiety, perhaps understanding the root cause of the anxiety. Medications, such as antidepressants, can be used to alleviate symptoms of anxiety.

Relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga, can also help reduce anxiety symptoms. Lifestyle changes, such as exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and avoiding alcohol and drugs can also help manage anxiety.

It is important to seek help if you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety. If you or someone you know is struggling with anxiety, reach out to a healthcare professional or mental health provider for support. Talk to your friends and family about how you are feeling. You do not have to do this alone.

With the right support and treatment, people with anxiety can lead fulfilling and healthy lives.
