North York Moors flight isn’t an ultra-rich person’s buzz

Richard Coleman says the North York Moors are “plagued by a small aircraft performing aerial stunts … loitering and polluting the air for one person’s pleasure” (Letters, 30 July). While I am sure that No 11 Air Experience Flight based at RAF Leeming would wish to apologise for the annoyance caused by the buzz of their engines, they would also wish to assure him that they are not ultra-rich. Since the early 2000s the RAF’s training aircraft has been owned and maintained by Babcock, which then leases it back to the RAF. As such, it has a civilian registration and does not carry the RAF badge. Coleman can comfort himself with the reflection that, apart from Tom Cruise, few wealthy people are able to carry out such manoeuvres, as they require regular practice.

• “There is no wealth but life.” I’m with Ruskin on this one. Mind you, having the wherewithal for the blind purchase of a Lakeland villa, and then fitting an oriel window to his bedroom to enjoy the prospect of moonlight on Coniston Water, was never going to be a cheap option.
