North West 200: Lee Johnston injuries "not critical" after red flag incident

Fermanagh rider Lee Johnston was airlifted to hospital following a crash in Thursday's North West 200 Supersport qualifying.

Johnston came off at the Church Corner section of the course which resulted in the session being red flagged.

Event director Mervyn Whyte later confirmed the 33-year-old's injuries were "not critical".

Whyte told the BBC: "We had an incident at Church Corner where the red flags came out and we stopped the session.

"The rider was Lee Johnston. Lee is not critical, he has been transported to York Corner and Air Ambulance will take him to hospital.

"His injuries are not critically related, so he is okay. It is a fast part of the circuit, coming into Church Corner.

"The safety bales did their job. He hit the bales on the entrance to the corner itself, but his injuries are not critical."

Johnston - who is based in Huddersfield - was one of the favourites in the Supersport class, having won at last year's North West 200 on board the Ashcourt Racing Yamaha.

He has won five times in total on the Triangle circuit, and is the current leader of the British Supersport Championship after recently claiming a double at Silverstone.

Thursday's schedule

  • Practice: Roads closed 9.15am to 3.15pm
  • Race One: Strain Engineering Supersport (6 laps) 5.45pm
  • Race Two: Briggs Equipment Superstock (6 laps) 6.30pm
  • Race Three: Milltown Service Station Supertwin (4 laps) 7.15pm
