AFL player Tarryn Thomas has asked police to drop criminal charges against him, as he faced court over allegations he violated a court order.
The 22-year-old North Melbourne midfielder appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday morning for a short hearing after being charged twice with breaching a court order in January.
He sat in the front row of the courtroom behind his lawyer, who said she was frustrated police were seeking a further adjournment when she was ready to contest the matter.
"It is our submission these charges have no prospect of success, I've spoken to the prosecution and had a case conference with them yesterday," she told the court.
"It is their position that they need more time to speak with others with respect to these charges, which is somewhat frustrating from the defence perspective."
Thomas will next appear in court on March 2.
North Melbourne issued a statement on Wednesday night about the player's court appearance.
"Thomas will continue prioritising his behavioural training and education program while the club determines plans for him moving forward," a spokesman said.
"The club will not make any further comment at this time."
Earlier this month, North Melbourne said Thomas was taking time away from the club over what they alleged were "serious and confronting" threats of violence towards women.
