North Lanarkshire tenants group opens new premises in Motherwell

A North Lanarkshire tenants group has celebrated the opening of new premises in Motherwell.

Locals came along to take a first look at North Lanarkshire Federation of Tenants and Residents’ (NLF) new premises, which were opened by NLC’s Housing Convener, Councillor Heather Brannan-McVey, alongside Jim Leonard, NLF chairperson.

The move to the new, improved, office space, located within the Dalziel Building, Motherwell, was supported following approval of additional funding by the council’s Housing and Regeneration Committee earlier this year.

One of the federation’s ambitions is to establish a digital inclusion project to improve digital engagement across the area, and their new premises will support this, providing more flexible use of accommodation and improved IT facilities to increase tenant involvement and participation.

The event also provided an informal opportunity for tenants to pop along, speak to staff and find out more about NLF’s work supporting tenants and residents from across North Lanarkshire’s communities.

Councillor Brannan-McVey, said: “It’s great to see the team settling into its new office space which will really make a difference to its operations.

“We’ve established a strong and successful working relationship with the federation and this year increased annual grant funding to further support its work, promoting and encouraging tenant and resident involvement.

“It was also a very poignant moment, marking the opening without Anne McGhee, former chairperson.

“Anne signed the lease and was a key driver in securing the premises, but she sadly passed away. It was appropriate for us all to take a moment to reflect on Anne’s achievements over the years.

“As we move forward, our shared vision will help shape and improve services, building stronger links with our communities. And this new office space, which is easily accessible, will be a focal point for tenants to participate and get involved in housing issues.”

Established in 2006, NLF, the largest tenants and residents’ group in Scotland, ensures residents receive excellent, quality housing and related services. It promotes and encourages tenants and resident involvement, making a difference by taking forward the views of the local people.

Jim Leonard, NLF chairperson, added: “I’d like to thank the council for their continuous support, which has allowed the federation to reconnect with tenants once again.

“We have already made plans to invite tenants to a programme of events throughout the year, which include food for thought sessions, open meetings and training days.”
