North Lanarkshire residents to benefit from millions of pounds of project investment

Communities are set to benefit from millions of pounds of investment as North Lanarkshire Council starts to roll out new local projects which will help improve the lives of our residents.

Hundreds of projects have already been delivered as part of the Local Development Programme (LDP) across the nine Community Board areas.

This includes community safety measures, such as new street lighting and CCTV cameras, renewed and improved play areas, new multi-use games areas providing facilities for local people and environmental improvements such as nature walkways and paths

In Wishaw and Shotts, there are plans to invest almost one million pounds over the next five years. From the outset, community groups and elected members are involved in deciding how to use the money to improve facilities that bring the most benefit to their areas.

Wishaw has already seen projects such as Community Safety CCTV, a new play area and skatepark in Overtown, a sculpture in Waterloo and a play area for Bellside.

There are more projects for Wishaw at the planning stage too. These include a play area for Attercliffe Avenue, welcome signage for Coltness and outdoor gyms for Overtown and Kenilworth Avenue.

And in Shotts, a new MUGA and play area has been completed and an additional one installed in Harthill as well as the Salsburgh Wheeled Sports Area, a war memorial for Harthill and an Allanton Miner memorial sculpture.

Community empowerment committee convener, Councillor Angela Campbell, said: “We have boards across all local areas which meet and involve local people, elected members, council officers and partners.

“People living in their own communities know where they would like to see money invested and improvements made and are keen to get involved and have their voices heard.

“These projects make a real difference to the lives of local people, whether it’s helping to improve community safety or giving children a place to play.

By listening to people in our community, we are making sure the money is spent where it is needed most.”
