North Lanarkshire councillors have opted to go against planners advice and refuse permission for a huge 5G mast in a Motherwell street.
Planning officials in North Lanarkshire had recommended that permission should be awarded for proposals to introduce the 40 metre mast in Fir Park Street.
A previous planning application to put in a place a 45m mast at the same location within the grounds of Fir Park Stadium was rejected by the committee in October 2021.
However, at a meeting of the council’s planning committee on Thursday, a motion from the SNP’s David Robb, who represents the Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig ward, to refuse permission was seconded by his party colleague Greg Lennon with the committee agreeing.
Councillor Robb said the previous application had been refused and the only difference was a reduction in height but it would still be higher than the stand and would dominate the area.
The previous application attracted controversy in the local area and the new, slightly revised plans have also proven to be unwanted with 52 individual objections to the development.
