North Lanarkshire Council gives go ahead for new vets in Wishaw town centre

North Lanarkshire Council has given the green light to the conversion of a former shop in Wishaw Main Street into a veterinary practice.

A planning application for change of use of the premises, at 150 Main Street, was submitted earlier this year and showed that the new owners of the unit had already started work on the conversion before learning that this planning approval would be required.

The unit previously operated as a carpet shop. The site is bounded by commercial units to all sides with Lidl’s supermarket to the rear.

There were no letters of support or objection to the plans.

Granting permission, the council planners report states: “The application site is located within a Strategic Town Centre within the North Lanarkshire Local Development Plan which seeks to support and encourage a range of appropriate uses to help maintain the role and function of the town centres.

“Veterinary services are considered to be an appropriate use for a town centre location.

“There are residential flats above the premises however Pollution Control have no objections to the proposal and only made comment to any light proposed and did not consider noise to be of an issue.

“Public carparks are located throughout the town centre and therefore parking is not an issue. It is not considered that the external alterations will have a detrimental affect on the appearance of the unit and similar designs can be seen throughout the town centre.

“It is considered that the proposed use if of a satisfactory use for a town centre and will not have a detrimental effect on the surrounding premises, residential properties or the wider town centre area.”
