North England vs South England: Premier League legends announced as captains for historic summer showdown

First-ever: North England FC vs South England FC - (Football Origin)

North England FC and South England FC have announced their respective captains for the match between former Premier League players this summer.

Former Chelsea captain John Terry will don the armband for the South, while the North side will be captained by ex-Liverpool and Manchester City winger Steve McManaman.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Terry revealed his excitement about the game: "North v South has always been a big rivalry and I am excited to get back out on the pitch and be part of this game.

“I am sure it will be an intensely contested game because there are bragging rights at stake and so nobody on either team is going to want to lose this one."

Meanwhile, McManaman added: "It will be great to be back sharing a dressing room with Robbie and we are both keen to ensure North England come out on top on June 1.

“To get a fixture going between the North and South of England is a great idea and I am really looking forward to being part of it."

Robbie Fowler will be a player-manager for the North, while former Tottenham and West Ham boss Harry Redknapp will be in the dugout for the South.

“There is obviously an element of fun to the game but I guarantee this will be competitive and serious because it will be great to beat them,” Fowler said.

“This has been an idea in the making for a number of years. It’s a great concept that I hope everyone gets behind. The battle between North and South will always be there, the rivalry will always be there and there can only be one winner, hopefully it will be us.”

Organisers have said the North team will bring together “local heroes and international stars who share northern roots or have become adopted icons at northern clubs”, with the South side containing a similar mix of “homegrown talent and global stars”.
